The King in Yellow

This illustration is my interpretation of a well-known figure from horror literature. I had been wanting to illustrate the King in Yellow (from the book of the same name by Robert W. Chambers) for a long time, but I wasn’t quite sure how to portray something so unexplainable — until this idea came to me.

Even though it’s a classic, I know not everyone is familiar with the King in Yellow. So just for a bit of context: it is a mysterious entity associated with a forbidden play (or book) that drives those who read it into madness.

In truth, the King in Yellow itself isn’t exactly a character in Chambers’ stories — there’s no clear explanation of what it actually is. It’s more like an idea that spreads and distorts reality; almost the very essence of madness.

It had been quite some time since I last created a personal piece. I got a lot out of this process — I worked on it for nearly a year in my spare time. It was pure experimentation: I developed new techniques and explored artistic concepts I hadn’t fully considered before.

The concept behind this piece may be a bit sensitive, so I prefer to leave the interpretation open. In the end, my main focus here was the painting itself. 🟡👁️🌀
